Component 1: Soc 15 Flashcards
What are the 3 main functions of the cardiovascular system?
- Transporting oxygen, carbon dioxide and nutrients to the body in order to perform
- Helping to clot blood to prevent bleeding and start healing
- Controlong the body’s temperature
What is the cardio respiratory system and what is cardiovascular?
Cardio respiratory system - The interaction of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to muscles during exercise.
Cardiovascular - To do with the heart, blood and blood vessels together
What is vasodilation and vasoconstriction?
Vasodilation - when the internal diamater of blood vessels (lumen) widen to allow increased blood flow.
Vasoconstriction - when the internal diamater of blood vessels narrow to allow decreased blood flow.
What is vascular shunting?
The process that increases blood flow to active areas during exercise and diverting blood away from inactive areas; achieved by vasodilation and vasoconstriction.
What are the parts of the heart?
- Right atrium (top left chamber)
- Right ventricle (bottom left chamber)
- Tricuspid valve (between right atrium and ventricle)
- Left atrium (top right chamber)
- Left ventricle (bottom left chamber)
- Bicuspid valve (between left atrium and ventricle)
- Vena Cava and pulmonary artery (far and middle left vessels)
- Aorta and pulmonary vein (far and middle right vessels)
What is the direction of blood flow?
- Oxygenated blood enters the pulmonary vein, through the left atrium, bicuspid valve, left ventricle and out through the aorta
- That blood reaches the rest of the body and gets deoxyenated after losing oxygen
- Deoxygenated blood enters the vena cava, through the right atrium, tricuspid valve, right ventricle and out through the pulmonary artery
- That blood reaches the lungs where it regains oxygen and becomes oxygenated
