Component 1: Soc 3 Flashcards
What are the 6 skill related components of fitness?
- Agility
- Balance
- Co-ordination
- Power
- Reaction time
- Speed
Define agility
The ability to change positions and control the body at speed.
Define balance
Being able to keep the body stable while at rest or on the move. Balance consists of two types; static balance and dynamic balance. Static balance is keeping the body stable while stationary (e.g) doing a handstand. Dynamic balance is controlled, stable position while moving.
Define Co-ordination
The ability to use two or more body parts at the same time together. There are multiple types of co-ordination; foot-eye, chest-eye, thigh-eye, head-eye, hand-eye.
Define power.
The ability to undertake strength performances quickly. It can be written as a formula: speed x strength.
Define reaction time.
The time between a stimulus and a movement in response to it.
Define speed.
The rate at which an individual can perform a movement or cover a distance.
Give an example of where an athlete would require Agility.
Running a 100m race does not require agility but doing floor work exercises in gymnastics does. A rugby player running for the try line also needs agility to dodge tackling defenders
Give an example of where an athlete would require Balance.
An example of where an athlete would need good balance is a gymnast as they will be able to execute flips etc without falling.
Give an example of where an athlete would require Power.
Athletes may use power to propel themselves or an object e.g. a sprinter driving out of the blokes or a discuss thrower throwing the discus. In many sports athletes need to be able to jump high either in a game such as football or in a discipline such as high jump.
Give an example of where an athlete would require speed.
An example of where speed is required most is in the 100m where good speed makes you more likely to win a short distance race. A lack of speed can be overcome in some sports by high skill levels, it can also make up for a lack of skill.
Give an example of where an athlete would require reaction time.
An example is in the 100m sprint where you begin after the shot of the gun or another stimulus.
Give an example of where an athlete would require Co-ordination.
An example in sport where an athlete would require good Co-ordination is tennis as you are running with your legs but your also hitting the ball with your hand whilst looking with your eyes.
Why is fitness testing important?
- Identifying strengths and weaknesses to change your programme to make improvements
- Monitoring your progress to have an idea of the effect the training has
- Giving yourself an incentive of reaching a particular goal or level
- Choosing the right component of fitness to train to increase performance
