Cocaine Flashcards
What is Cocaine
A Noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor/sodium channel blocker and a is a local anaesthetic
what is Cocaine used for
Cocaine is a local anaesthetic indicated for the introduction of local (topical) anaesthesia of accessible mucous membranes of the oral, laryngeal and nasal cavities.
how does Cocaine produces anaesthesia
by inhibiting excitation of nerve endings or by blocking conduction in peripheral nerves. This is achieved by reversibly binding to and inactivating sodium channels, which are necessary for the depolarization of nerve cell membranes and subsequent propagation of impulses along the course of the nerve
what is special about Cocaine
is the only local anaesthetic with vasoconstrictive properties
why does Cocaine have vasoconstrictive feature
This is a result of its blockade of norepinephrine reuptake in the autonomic nervous system.
What is responsible for the addictive property of cocaine
Its effect on dopamine levels
What does cocaine bind differentially to
Cocaine binds differentially to the dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine transport proteins
what does Cocaine directly prevent the reuptake of
dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine into pre-synaptic neurons
