CM- Chemical Waste Flashcards
What three sub-systems makeup the CM system?
Radioactive Chem Waste- that collects the corrosive radioactive waste from the chemical lab and decon stations
Cooling Water Waste- that collects the chemically treated cooling water from the auxiliary and radwaste buildings for reuse or disposal. Cooling water holdup tank.
Condensate polisher regeneration waste- that collects and neutralizes the potentially radioactive waste for disposal if it is non-radioactive, or discharges to the liquid radwaste system if it is radioactive
Which of the CM sub-systems is a gravity collection system?
Radioactive Chemical Waste
Where does the CM Radioactive Chemical Waste collect its drains from?
- Decon Room,
- Special Decon room,
- Sample hood and hot lab fume hoods,
- instrument respirator maintenance and issue room,
- and cold lab fume hood
Where do the CM Radioactive Chemical Waste collected drains go??

chemical drain tank pumps take suction from and discharge to LR Holdup Tanks
How many CM Cooling Water Holdup Pumps are there and what is their capacity? Location?
Two 100% capacity centrifugal pumps
40’ aux. building below cooling water holdup tank
Where is the water from the CM Cooling Water Holdup Tank pumped to?
Discharges to the Chemical Waste Neutralizer Tanks
There are branch lines provided for diverting the pump discharge to the EW surge tanks or to NC surge tanks
What is the maximum normal drainage to the CM Cooling Water Holdup Tank and what is the maximum abnormal?
Normal – 10 gal/day
Abnormal – 1500 gal/day
The Condensate Polishing Demineralizer waste sub-system consists of what components?
- Two condensate polishing demineralizer sumps with two 100% capacity sump pumps
- two chemical waste neutralizer tanks each equipped with an agitator
- two neutralizer transfer pumps
The Condensate Polisher regeneration waste can be divided into what two types?
High and low TDS
The CD Low TDS sump is filled from what two operations?
Final rinsing of the regenerated resin to remove all traces of acid or caustic
Overflow from the resin cleaning operation that removes particulates from the condensate polisher resins
(receives flows of low conductivity, <1000 ppm)
Where are the CD High and Low TDS sumps pumped to?
High TDS – to the chemical waste neutralizer tanks
Low TDS – normally pumped to the CW return line for reuse unless there is radioactive contamination, in which case the water can be discharged to the low TDS (LRS) holdup tanks. Can also be diverted to the neutralizer tanks via high TDS sump pumps discharge
What flows can the CWNTs receive?
- CD high and low TDS sumps
- Waste from cooling water holdup tank
- the condenser area sumps, if there is secondary plant contamination
What is the capacity of the CM Cooling Water Holdup Tank and where is it located?
5000 gallons
40’ Aux Building above the Cooling Water Holdup Tank Pumps
What is the maximum useable capacity of the Condensate Polishing Demineralizer Sumps?
2600 gallons
How many penetrations into the CD High TDS sump?
Two – One 4” line for equipment and floor drains and one 6” line for regeneration waste
Where are the Condensate Polishing Demineralizer Sumps located?
Southeast corner of the Turbine Building at the 100’ level along with the sump pumps
What is the capacity of the Chemical Waste Neutralizer Tanks?
37,000 gallons each
Where are the chemical waste neutralizer tanks located, and what are they equipped with?
Yard area north of the Turbine building
Equipped with one propeller type motor driven agitator
What are the level alarms associated with the EW rooms CM sump level control?
Alarm in the control room for high level in the sump, and if level is 9” above the floor, high-high alarm will initiate
What is the interlock associated with the CM cooling water Holdup tank pump controls and tank level switches?
two are for low and high level
one functions to shutoff the pumps in the event of a low level in the tank
What can I expect to happen if a “loss of echo” condition occurs in the CWNT?
The processor is programmed to bring in the tank high level alarm and open the pump running circuit so that the CWNT pump will stop or cannot be started
What powers all of the CM system pumps?
NH
What is the normal discharge alignment of the CD High TDS sump and B/D high and low TDS sumps?
to the in-service CWNT
How full do we allow the Cooling Water Holdup tanks to get before we pump it down?
~85% level
Concerning the CM system, what is the adverse effect if the radioactive chemical waste drain system fails? Cooling water waste system? CD demin waste system?
Chemistry sampling will not be possible
level in the Essential Cooling Water Rooms could get high enough to make the system inoperable.
ability to regenerate the Polishers could be lost. This would adversely affect Steam Generator chemistry
What are the CD High and Low TDS sumps provided with to protect plant personnel?
gas-tight covers and vented to the building HVAC
Where are the CD demin sumps located? Where are the sumps vented to?
100’ turbine building southeast corner
building hvac
What lubricates the intermediate and case bearings of the CD demin high and low TDS sump pumps?
pump discharge
Describe the Chemical Waste Neutralizer Tank pumps. Location?
centrifugal
oil lubricated
mech. seals
yard area, below CWNTs
What drains and overflows does the cooling water hold up tank receive?
- NC surge tank
- norm. chillers
- EC circ. pump
- A and B EW surge tanks
- waste gas compressors
- BAC
- LRS evap
- seal injection
- LDHX shell and relief drains
- A and B EWHX and pump room

Where are the chemical waste neutralizer tanks pumped to normally and abnormally?
retention tanks
LRS TDS hold up tanks
The control room gets an alarm on what level in the CM sumps?
high-high
Describe the chemical waste neutralizer tank level switches.
“loss of echo” brings in high alarm and prevents pump start
high level alarms the control room
low level stops the neutralizer transfer pump
What is done prior to sending cooling water holdup tank contents to the chemical waste neutralizer tanks?
sampled for radioactivity
tank contains chemically treated cooling water during certain maintenance operations
Concerning the CWNT transfer pumps, what are the interlocks associated with tank level and the cross-over valve?
if the cross-over valve is open and either tank gets a lo-lo level, both pumps are stopped
