Chlamydia Flashcards
Chlamydia - description
Family Chlamydiaceae - Obligate intracellular bacteria - Gram Negative - Elimentary vs. reticulate body
Chlamydiaceae - Elimentary body
Infective
Chlamydiaceae - Reticulate body
Metabolically active
Chlamydiaceae - genuses
Chlamydia spp & Clamydophila spp.
Chlamydiaceae - zoonotic species
Chlamydophila abortus, felis, pneumoniae
C. abortus in Humans
Influenza-like illness - Abortion - Septicemia - Hepatitis - Kidney dysfuction - Pneumonia - DIC
C. pneumoniae in humans
Zoonotic exposure not linked to any cases of human disease
C. abortus in Sheep & Goats
Important cuase of enzootic late term abortion (may be carried asymptomatically)
C felis in cats
Common cause of conjunctivitis - Blepharospasm, chemosis, congestion, ocular discharge - Mild to moderate rhinitis & pneumonitis
Chlamydiaceae life cycle
Elimentary body (stable in env’t) taken up by host –> transforms into reticulate bodies (metabolically active) –> divide & differentiate into elementary body –> Released from cell
Chlamydiaceae Transmission
Ingestion - Aerosol - Direct inoculation - Other abortion products - Venereal
C. felis transmission
Shed in ocular & nasal secretions
C. abortus lesion
Placentitis, relatively normal fetus, petechiae
C. felis lesions
Conjunctivitis, rhinitis
Chlamydiaceae treatments
Tetracycline, erythromycin, quinolones
