Chapter 8 - Articulations Flashcards
What is an articulation?
Joint.
What do joints do?
Hold bones together but may permit movement.
Points of contact of articulations?
Between 2 bones, between cartilage and bone, and between teeth and bones.
Arthrology is?
Study of joints.
Kinesiology is?
Study of motion.
How are joints classified?
Based on how they move or based on anatomy.
Three types of joints based on motion?
Synarthrosis (immovable), amphiarthrosis (slightly), and diathrosis (freely).
Three types of joints based on anatomy?
Fibrous (collagen fibers), cartilaginous (cartilage), synovial (joint capsule & accessory ligaments).
What are fibrous joints?
Lack a synovial cavity, bones held together by fibrous CT, and little or no movement.
3 types of fibrous joints?
Sutures, syndesmoses, gomphoses.
What is a suture?
Thin layer of dense fibrous CT that unites bones of skull, immovable.
If a suture is completely fused in adults it is called?
Synostosis.
Characteristics of a syndesmosis joint?
Fibrous joint, bones are united by ligaments, and slightly movable.
Example of a syndesmosis joint?
Interosseous membrane.
Characteristics of a gomphosis joint?
Ligament holds cone-shaped peg in bony socket and immovable.
