chapter 7 Flashcards
conscious
being mentally alert and having awareness of surroundings, sensations, and thoughts
first aid
emergency care given immediately to an injured person by the first people to respond to an emergency
CPR
cardiopulmonary resuscitation refers to medical procedures used when a person’s heart or lungs have stopped working. CPR is used until medical help arrives, must be started immediately to help prevent/lessen brain damage
obstructed airway
when something is blocking the tube through which air enters the lungs
abdominal thrusts
method of attempting to remove an object from airway of someone who is choking
SHOCK
occurs when organs and tissues in the body do not receive an adequate blood supply, bleeding, heart attack, severe infection, and falling BP can lead to shock
MI
myocardial infarction, occurs when the heart muscle itself does not receive enough oxygen bc blood vessels are blocked
symptoms of shock
pale skin, staring, increased pulse and respiration rates, low BP, and extreme thirst
symptoms of poisoning
suspected when a resident vomits, has heavy difficulty breathing, is very drowsy, is confused, or has burns or red areas around the mouth
care of burn
depends on its depth, size, and location, three types, first degree (superifical), second-degree (partial-thickness), adn third-degree (full-thickness)
first degree burns
involve just outer layer of skin, skin becomes red, painful, and swollen but no blisters appear
second degree burns
extend from outer layer of skin to the next deeper layer of skin, skin is red, painful, and swollen and blisters appear
third-degree burns
involve all 3 layers of the skin and may extend to the bone, skin is shiny, and appears hard, may be white in color
syncope
fainting, occurs as a result of decreased blood flow to the brain, causing a loss of consciousness, may be result of hunger, hypoglycemia, dehydration, fear, pain, fatigue, standing for a long time, poor ventilation, certain meds, preg, or overheating, or orthostatic hypertension
orthostatic hypertension
aka postural hypertension, sudden drop in BP that occurs when a person stands or sits up
symptoms of fainting
dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, perspirations, pale skin, weak pulse, shallow respirations, and blackness in visual field
epistaxis
can occur suddenly when the air is dry, when injury has occurred, or when person has taken certain meds
insulin reaction or hypoglycemia
can result from either too much insulin or too little food, occurs when insulin is given and person skips meal or does not eat food , first sign is feeling weak or diff, nervous, dizzy and perspirations
DKA
diabetic ketoacidosis, caused by having too little insulin in the body, can result from undiagnosed diabetes, infection, going without insulin or not taking enough insulin, eating too much, not getting enough exercise, or physical or emotional stress
seizures
involuntary, often violent, contractions of muscles, caused by abnormalities in the brain
TIA
warning sign of a CVA, result of a temporary lack of oxygen in the brain
F.A.S.T
acronym that can be used as a way to remember sudden signs that a stroke is occurring, Face is one side of the face drooping, is it numb, is smile uneven, Arms, is one arm numb or weak, ask to raise the arms, see if it drifts, speech, is speech slurred, is person unable to speak or be understood, time, if any sx, report to nurse
emesis
act of ejecting stomach contents through mouth/nose, can be sign of serious illness or injury
