chapter 6 Flashcards
paralysis
loss of ability to move all or part of the body
disorientation
confusion about person place or time
scalds
burns caused by hot liquids
dry heat and wet heat
dry heat (hot iron, stove, other electrical appliances) vs wet heat (hot water/liquids, steam), or chemicals
abrasion
injury that rubs off the surface of the skin, typically occurs in the bathroom or kitchen from sharp objects
oxygen therapy
administration of oxygen to increase the supply of oxygen to the lungs; which increases availability of oxygen to the body tissues. NAs never stop/adjust/or administer oxygen
combustion
process of burning; oxygen is a very dangerous fire hazard bc it makes other things burn (supports combustion)
flammable
easily ignited and capable of burning quickly; ex. alcohol/nail polish remover/cigs/matches/flammable liquids/petroleum based
Safety data sheet (SDS)
required by OSHA that all hazardous chemicals have a SDS which details the chemical ingredients, chemical dangers, and safe handling, storage, and disposal procedures for the product
restraint
physical or chemical way to restrict voluntary movement or behavior
physical restraint
any method, device, material, or equipment that restricts a person’s freedom of movement, includes vest restraints, belt restraints, wrist/ankle restraints, and mitt restraints
chemical restraint
meds used to control a person’s mood or behavior
enabler
equipment/device that promotes a resident’s safety, comfort, independence, and mobility
suffocation
stoppage of breathing from lack of oxygen or excess of carbon dioxide in the body that may result in unconsciousness or death
muscle atrophy
weakening or wasting away of the muscle
restraint free care
restraints are not kept or used for any reason
restraint alternatives
measures used in place of a restraint or that reduce need for a restraint
OBRA’s restraint rules
restraints are used only after everything else has been ruled out and can only be applied with a doctor’s order, NA must be trained on how to use the restraints, residents must be monitored continuously
body mechanics
the way the parts of the body work together when a person moves, using proper body mechanics helps save energy and prevent injury
alignment
when person stands sits or lies straight, the vertical line is straight and body is in alignment, person can maintain proper alignment when lifting or carrying object by keeping object close to body
posture
the way a person holds and positions the body
lever
moves an object by resting on a base of support called a fulcrum
fulcrum
base of support, foundation that supports an object
center of gravity in the body
point where the most weight is concentrated
three elements for fire to occur
HFO - heat, fuel, oxygen
PASS
acronym to help use a fire extinguisher, Pull the pin; Aim at the base of fire when spraying; Squeeze the handle, Sweep back and forth at base of fire
RACE
acronym used in case of a fire; Remove anyone in danger if you are not in danger, Activate alarm or call 911; Contain the fire if possible by closing all doors and windows; Extinguish the fire or the fire dept will extinguish it, evacuate the area if told to
