positioning
helping residents into positions that promote comfort and health with use of pillows to relieve pressure and avoid skin breakdown
supine
resident lies flat on back, pillows at head/shoulders, under buttocks, and calves so heels are elevated
lateral
lying on either side, with knee flexed, and pillows supporting arm and leg, head/back, and bottom foot so toes ankles not touching bed
prone
lying on stomach, or front side of body, arms at sides, raised above head, or one raised and one by side, and head turned to side, pillows at head, and feet
fowlers
in semi-sitting position (45-60 degrees) head and shoulders elevated, knees may be flexed and elevated, spine should be straight, high fowlers is 60-90 deg and semi-fowler is 30-45, pillows at head/and under knees
sims’
left side-lying position, lower arm is behind back, upper knee is flexed towards chest, with pillows for head, arm, flexed knee, and foot
draw sheet
extra sheet placed on top of bottom sheet when bed is made, should be flat, no wrinkles, helps prevent skin damage caused by shearing
shearing
rubbing or friction that results from skin moving one way and the bone underneath remaining fixed or moving in opposite direction
logrolling
moving a resident as unit, without distrubing alignment of the body, head, back and legs should be kept in a straight line, necessary in cases of neck/back problems, spinal cord injuries or after back/hip surgeries
dangle
from lying to standing, to sit up on side of bed with legs hanging over side, which helps regain balance and allows BP to stablize
ergonomics
science of designing equpment, areas, and work tasks to make them safer and to suit worker’s abilities, guidelines by OSHA
transfer belt
safety device used to transfer residents who are weak, unsteady, or uncoordinated; aka gait belt when used to help residents walk, gives NA something firm to hold onto when assisting with transfers, not used when R has fragile bones, fx, or recent surgery
slide board
transfer board that may be used to transfer R who are unable to bear weight on legs, used for almost any transfer that involves moving from one sitting position to another
when resident in wheelchair
should be repositioned at least every hours, to promote comfort, reduce pressure, increase circulation, exercises joints, promotes muscle tone
C cane
straigh cane with curved handle at top, with rubbed tipped bottom to prevent slipping
