defacation
bowel elimination, act of passing feces from large intestine out of the body through the anus
feces
aka stool/BM are semi-solid material made up of water, solid waste material, bacteria, and mucus
peristalsis
involuntary contractions that move food through GI system
hemmorhoids
enlarged veins in the rectum, common causes: chronic constipation, obesity, pregnancy, chronic diarrhea, overuse of laxatives and enemas, and straining during BMs
malabsorption
body cannot absorb or digest a particular nutrient properly, often accomp by diarrhea
GERD
chronic condition in which liquid contents of stomach back up into esophagus, which can inflame and damage lining of esophagus, can cause bleeding or ulcers
heartburn
weakening of the sphincter muscle that joins the esophagus and the stomach
ulceration
result if heartburn occurs frequently and remains untreated
peptic ulcers
raw sores in the stomach, where a dull or burning pain occurs 1-3 hrs after eating, accomp by belching or vomiting, can cause bleeding or black tarry stools, caused by excessive acids
UC
ulcerative colitis, chronic inflammatory dz of large intestines, includes cramping diarrhea pain on one side of lower abd, rectal bleeding, loss of appetite, and weight loss
stoma
artificial opening in the stomach
colorectal cancer
aka colon ca, ca of GI tract,
enema
putting fluid into rectum in order to eliminate stool or feces
ostomy
surgical creation of an opening from an area inside the body to the outside
ureterostomy
when ureter is opened to abdomen for urine to be eliminated
