vital signs
shows how well the vital organs of the body are working, consists of body temp, pulse rate, respiration rate, BP, and observing/reporting level of pain
normal BP
<120/80
low BP

nl pulse rate
60-100 in adults, 100-120 for small children, 120-180 for infants
nl respiratory rate
12-20 rpm in adults, infants and children 30-40 rpm
6 diff types of thermometers
digital, electronic, disposable, tympanic, temporal artery, mercury-free
rectal temp
can be necessary for R who are unconscious, with poorly fitting dentures/missing teeth, or anyone having trb through nose
high pulse rate
does not indicate dz, but can signal that illness exits, fast pulse may result from fever, dehydration, or heart failure, slow pulse may indicate infection
apnea
absence of breathing
dyspnea
difficulty breathing
eupnea
normal breathing
orthopnea
shortness of breath when lying down that is relieved by sitting up
tachypnea
rapid breathing
bradypnea
slow breathing
cheyne-stokes
alternating periods of slow, irregular breathing and rapid shallow breathing along with short periods of apnea
sphygmomanometer (aneroid)
type of manual sphygmomanometer that consists of cuff, bulb, and pressure gauge, should not be measured on an arm that has an IV, a dialysis shunt or any med equipment, cast, recent trauma, paralysis, burns, or has had breast surgery
