terminal illness
dz or condition that will eventually cause death
grief
deep distress or sorrow over a loss
denial
stage in which ppl may refuse to believe they are dying, often believe mistake is made, not me stage
anger
once they start to face possibility of death, they become angry, maybe bc they think too young to die, is a nl and healthy rxn, why me stage
bargaining
once ppl begin to believe that they are really dying, they make promises to god or higher power to try to bargain for their recovery
depression
as dying ppl become weaker and sx get worse, they become depressed, may cry, withdraw, unable to perform simple activities, and need additional physical and emotional support
acceptance
peace or acceptance may or may not come, may seem emotionally detached
PCA device
patient controlled analgesia device, a method of pain control that allows patients to administer pain meds themselves
palliative care
type of care given to ppl who are dying that emphasized relieving pain controlling sx and preventing side effects/complications, also given to those who have serious chronic dz such as ca, CHF, AIDs
long term care
goal is to focus on R’s recovery or on R’s ability to care for herself as much as possible
hospice care
goal is comfort and dignity of resident
