dorsal recumbent position
used to examine the breasts, chest, abdomen, and perineal area, resident is flat on her back with her knees flexed and feet flat on the bed, drape is put over the resident, covering her body, her head remains uncovered
lithotomy
position used to examine the vagina, where resident lies on her back and her hips are brought to edge of exam table, legs are flexed, and her feet are in padded stirrups, drape is put over resident covering her body, drape is also brought down to cover perineal area and tops of thighs
knee-chest
may be used to examine rectum or vagina, where R is lying on her abdomen and legs are separated, arms pulled up and flexed, head turned to side, R will have gown and possibly socks, drape should be applied in diamond shape to cover back buttocks and thighs
