Chapter 49: Vasodilators Flashcards
hat are the therapeutic uses of vasodilators
- essential hypertension
- hypertensive crisis
- angina pectoris
- heart failure
- myocardial infraction
- pheochromocytoma
- peripheral vascular disease
- pulmonary arterial hypertension
- production of controlled hypotension during surgery
adverse affects of vasodilators
- postural hypotension
- reflex tachycardia
- expansion of blood volume
patients taking vasodilators are at increased risk of
FALLS
Hydralazine [apresoline] therapeutic uses
- essential hypertension
- hypertensive crisis
- heart failure
Hydralazine [Apresoline] effects
- reflex tachycardia
- increased blood volume
- systemic lupus erythematosus-like syndrome
- headache, dizziness, weakness, and fatigue
hydralazine [Apresoline] MOA
- selective dialation of arterioles; little or no effect on veins
Minoxidil MOA
selective dilation of arterioles
- more intense than hydralazine; but more adverse reactions
Minoxidil is used for
severe hypertension that is unresponsive to safer drugs
Minoxidil adverse effects
- reflex tachycardia
- sodium and water retention
- hypertrichosis
- pericardial effusion
Sodium Nitroprusside [Nitropress] MOA
- fast acting antihypertensive agent
- causes venous and arteriolar dilation
Sodium Nitroprusside [Nitropress] onset
immediate (BP returns to pretreatment level in minutes when stopped)
Sodium Nitroprusside [Nitropress] is used for
hypertensive emergencies
Sodium Nitroprusside [Nitropress] adverse effects
- excessive hypotension
- thiocyanate toxicity
