Chapter 37 Flashcards
Oxygen Needs
how long until you are dead w/o oxygen ?
5 min
respiration is affected if what functions are affected ?
- air moving in / out of lungs
- exchanging O2 / CO2 between alveoli / capillaries
- blood carries O2 to cells / CO2 out of cells
hypoxia
not enough oxygen
hypoxia can lead to ?
- restlessness
- dizziness
- disorientation
cyanosis
bluish discoloration of skin
normal respiration rate
12-20 breathes per min
tachypnea
rapid breathing; more than 20 breaths per min
bradypnea
slow breathing; less than 12 breaths per min
apnea
absence of breathing
dyspnea
painful / labored breathing
cheyne-strokes respirations
respirations increase in rate / depth then shallow and then apnea for 10-20sec
kussmaul respirations
extreme deep / rapid despiration
pulse oximetry
pulse ox, O2 saturation, SpO2
- measure oxygen concentration in blood (%)
normal pulse ox range ?
95-100%
where can you attach pulse ox sensor ?
- finger
- toe
- earlobe
- forehead
what should you avoid when attaching pulse ox sensor ?
- bright lights
- nail polish
- movements that can affect measurement
- swollen / broken skin
if measuring BP on one arm, what site should pulse ox be taken ?
on the other arm
orthopneic position
sitting up / leaning over table to breathe
when should deep-breathing / coughing exercises be done to avoid mucus build up ?
every 1-2 hours
- after surgery / injury
- during bed rest
deep breathing exercise procedure
1) persons hands on top of each other over rib cage
2) deep inhale through nose and hold 2-3 sec
3) exhale slowly through pursed lips until rib is as low down as possible
repeat around 4 times
coughing exercise procedure for non-productive cough (no mucus / phlegm)
1) persons hands on top of each other over rib cage / on pillow over ribcage
2) deep inhale through nose
3) cough strongly twice w/ mouth open
coughing exercise procedure for productive cough (mucus / phlegm)
practice cough etiquette (cover nose / mouth while coughing)
1) you splint the chest / abdominal incision w/ hands / pillow while wearing gloves
2) deep inhale through nose
3) cough strongly twice w/ mouth open but covered
hypoxemia
O2 in blood is less than normal
oxygen is what for person ?
technically a drug
- requires dr. order
- you DO NOT give oxygen; nurse does
