purpose of oral hygiene
- reduce risk of tooth decay (cavities) and periodontal (gum) disease
- reduce plaque / tartar build-up
periodontal diease
disease of the gums; hums are inflamed / swollen and can loosed teeth leading to tooth loss
what information do you need before giving oral hygiene care ?
- what kind of care (denture, unconscious, etc.)
- if flossing is needed
- equipment needed
- how often / when care is needed
observations to report / record
- inflamed / swollen / blistered lips
- odor
- irritation redness sores / white patches
- bleeding
- loose teeth / painful areas
- loose / chipped dentures
- discomfort
why do you follow Bloodborne Pathogen Standard when giving care ?
- gums may bleed during care
- mouth contains many microbes
flossing
- clean in-between teeth
- prevent gum disease
ADA recommends AT LEAST once a day
equipment needed to give care to aware / awake person ?
- soft bristle toothbrush
- toothpaste
- floss, etc.
- mouthwash, etc.
- kidney basin
- water cup
- tissue / towel
- gloves
- straw
who do you give oral care to ?
- weak
- cannot move / use arms
- too confused to brush teeth
mouth care for unconscious person ?
1) position person on their side
2) use small amount of fluid at a time
3) do not insert dentures
care at least every 2 hours
