Isolation Precaution
infectious control
practices / procedures used to prevent spread of infection
standard precaution
used for all persons whenever care is given to prevent spread of infection
gloves
used when contact with blood / OPIM likely; avoid direct contact with open skin / mucous membrane, when equipment may be contaminated
gowns
used when contact with blood / OPIM likely; to protect body / clothes from contact
mask / goggles / face shield
used when splashes / sprays of blood / OPIM / body fluid likely; to protect you spreading and intaking fluids through mask and mucus membranes
transmission-based precaution
used when person is know / suspected to have infection
types of transmission-based precautions
contact, droplet, airborne; PPE and procedures dependent on which one
contact-based precautions
PHYSICAL TOUCH; in own room or ≥ 3ft apart with privacy curtain drawn, limit transport, wear gloves and gown
droplet-based precautions
RESPIRATORY DROPLETS; in own room or ≥ 3-6ft apart with privacy curtain drawn, wear mask / face shield and gown
airborne-based precautions
AIRBORNE ROUTE; in own isolation out-vented room, limit transport, wear gloves, gown, goggles, N95 / respirator
dedicated equipment
equipment special to one person, kept in specific room
donning PPE steps
1) hand-hygiene (40-60sec)
2) gown
3) mask (fit to nose then pull down and loop) / respirator
4) goggles / face shield
5) gloves (over gown sleeves)
doffing PPE steps
1) gloves (grasp wrist first then next inside)
2) goggles / face shield
3) gown (avoid touching outside)
4) mask (by loops) / respirator
5) hand-hygiene (40-60sec)
hand-hygiene
wash hands when visibly soiled, if not then alcohol based hand sanitizer is enough
proper hand-washing steps
1) wet hands
2) enough soap
3) palm-to-palm
4) interlock back hands
5) interlock front hands
6) back of fingers to palm
7) thumb-thingie
8) finger tips to palms
9) rinse off
10) pat dry with towel
11) 2 separate new towels to close either sink handle
