- identify items within unit / explain instructions for each
- how to use call light in room & bathroom
- explain how to use agency phone / how to connect to WiFi
- explain where to find the nurses’ station, chapel, lounge, dining room, etc.
- what time meals / snacks are served
- visiting hours / policies

- temperature
- ventilation

how to protect patients from the cold ?
- wear enough clothing
- offer covering (blankets, etc.)
- provide enough blankets
- use of bath blankets when giving care
- move away from cold / drafty areas
why are older people more likely to feel cold ?
poor circulation / loss of fatty tissue layer due to age
“comfortable” sound level according to CMS
- does not interfere w/ person’s hearing
- promotes privacy when desired
- allows person to take place in social activities
staff must try to reduce noise by doing what ?
- not speaking loudly
- remind others to speak softly when necessary
- avoid unnecessary conversation
- handle equipment carefully / properly
- ensure equipment are maintained

noise affects persons w/ dementia how ?
lack of understanding around them; may be more prone to being disturbed by noise, especially at nighttime

how to reduce odors ?
- clean tools for voiding (toilet, bedpan, etc,)
- check / clean persons who are incontinent
- dispose of incontinence products quickly
- change soiled / wet linens
- keep laundry bin closed
- provide good hygiene care
- use room deordorizers
if smoking pay attention to what ?
- clothes
- hair
- breath for smoke odor
wash hands after smoking / handling materials
safe / comfortable lighting is ?
- lessens glares
- allows the person to control brightness / location / direction of light
- allows impaired to maintain / increase independence
