why are catheters used ?
- keep bladder empty
- promote comfort for those unable to use toilet, bedpan, etc.
- protect wounds / injuries
- measure hourly output
- collect sterile urine specimen
- measure residual urine (urine in bladder after voiding)
do catheters treat incontinence ?
no; it is a form of providing comfort for incontinent persons, not the solution
catheters create a high risk for what ?
UTIs; microbes can enter through the catheter itself or from the surrounding of the catheter
- “catheter - associated urinary tract infection” (CAUTI)
how to care for indwelling catheters ?
- no catheter tube kinks
- drainage bag is below bladder, hanging from the bed frame (never from bed rails)
- never touching the floor
- tube straight line / properly coiled secured to bottom linens w/ clamps
where should catheters be fastened for females ?
to the inner thigh
where should catheters be fastened for males ?
lower abdomen
when should drainage bag of catheter be emptied ?
- when it is nearly full
- end of shift
- changing to / from leg bag / standard drainage bag
what should be done when emptying a catheter drainage bag ?
- use a graduate container to drain urine into
- do not let drainage bag touch the floor / graduate
- report increase / decrease in amount of urine output
