Bed Making
beds are used to what ?
- promote comfort
- prevent skin breakdown
- prevent pressure injuries
when are beds made ?
everyday, usually in the morning while person is out of room
to keep beds neat and clean:
- change linens when wet / soiled / damp
- straighten linens when loose / wrinkled
- check linens to remove food / crumbs or other items (dentures, eyeglasses, hearing aids, etc.)
closed bed
bed not in-use / person out most of day; is ready for new person after being disinfected
open bed
bed ready for use; top linens fan-folded to foot of bed
occupied bed
bed made with person in it
surgical bed
made to transfer person bed to stretcher’ introduce person from ambulance
linens to make bed ?
- bottom sheet
- top sheet
- bedspread
- pillow / pillow case
linens for personal hygiene ?
- bath towel
- hand towels
- washcloths
- gowns / pajamas
- bath blankets
bath blanket
covering used for privacy / warmth during bathing / hygiene / care measures and while making occupied bed
drawsheet
small sheet placed over the middle of bottom sheet to keep mattress / bottom linens clean
what else can flat sheet be used as ?
flat sheet folded in half can serve as drawsheet / assisting device
waterproof under-pad
absorbent pad w/ quilted top layer and waterproof bottom layer; used for incontinence / moving device
order of usage of linens:
1) mattress pad (if needed)
2) bottom fitted / flat sheet
3) drawsheet (if needed)
4) waterproof under-pad (if needed)
5) top sheet
6) blanket (if needed)
7) bedspread
8) pillowcase(s)
how to handle linens properly ?
- practice asepsis
- wash hands before handling clean linens / after removing used linens
- hold away from uniform / body
- never shake linens
- never place on floor / clean surface
- only rinse / sort linens in designated cleaning room
- bag used linens in room they were used (biohazard bag for blood / OPIM linens)
- do not carry used linens outside room unbagged
