Grooming

what is the point of grooming ?
- prevent infection
- promote comfort
- increase love, belonging, self-esteem needs
what is done for overall grooming ?
- washing / brushing hair
- shaving as needed

how often is brushing / combing hair done ?
- personal discretion
- does themselves if possible to promote independence
- person chooses when / how its done

brushing non-matted hair procedure ?
1) position the person (chair or fowlers)
2) place towel on back / shoulders and person puts any eyewear back in the case
3) part hair down middle; and separate those halves in half (1/4th sections)
4) brush scalp to ends (if person prefers vice-versa)
5) remove towel and style hair as preferred
brushing matted hair ?
same as non-matted
- small sections of matting at a time
- brushing from ends to scalp
- adding more matting sections after one section is unmatted
how often is shampooing done ?
- persons preference; all affected by hair / scalp condition, hairstyle, personal choice
- done on bath days if not done by hairdresser / barber

how to prevent shampoo getting in person’s eye ?
- have person tilt their head back when pouring water
- cover their eyes with a washcloth
- cup the top of their head to make a barrier

bed shampoo procedure ?
1) cover / position person; flatten bed
2) place waterproof pad / replace pillow w/ shampoo basin supporting head / neck w/ towel
3) fill water pitcher w/ water (105°F)
4) person hold wash cloth over the eyes
5) wet the hair, apply small amounts of shampoo / lather in hands
6) shampoo hair from hairline to neckline and rinse repeating until water is clean then condition
7) remove supplies, dry person with towel
covering then the scalp
8) comb / style hair
