Equal Protection Clauses
Guarantees basic rights to everyone
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
Promoted equal rights for African Americans and pressured Wilson to end segregation.
Dr. MLK Jr
Led a lot of anti-discrimination groups and protested a lot of bad things.
Foundational Document: “Letter From Birmingham Jail”
Response to white people asking MLK to end the protests. Discusses the steps for nonviolent campaigns. Says that Birmingham followed all of these, and now they need more direct actions. Why they can’t wait to take action.
Nineteenth Amendment
Gave women the right to vote
Equal Pay Act
Required that men and woman should be paid the same amount for the same job. Only applied when women got hired.
National Organization for Women (NOW)
Founded by Betty Friedan in favor of women’s rights.
Strict Scrutiny
Analysis by courts to make sure legislation doesn’t violate laws.
Title IX
Guaranteed women would have the same educational opportunities as men in programs with federal funding.
Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)
Equality of rights will not be denied because of gender. It was never passed.
Lawrence v. Texas (2003)
Struck down law criminalizing having sex with another person of your gender.
“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”
Military can’t ask you who you have sex with but you can’t tell them
Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)
States don’t have to recognize same-sex marriages of other states. Federal government doesn’t recognize gay marriage.
Obergefell v. Hodges (2015)
The government stops worrying about people’s sexual partners and does real work.
Botsock v. Clayton County (2020)
Workplace discrimination is illegal.
