Each state had independence, weakened central government, and equal representation.
Weakness of the Articles of Confederation
9 states had to agree to make laws, all states had to agree to change the Articles, no taxes, no army on national levels, no currency, no court, couldn’t regulate cross state trade.
How did the government get funding under the Articles?
The states had to agree to give the government funds.
How did the inability to tax affect the government?
They couldn’t pay off their war debts and they had to depend on the states to get money which made them very dependent.
Shay’s Rebellion
Farmers lost their farms because of high state taxes and they stormed court buildings. The government had no money to raise a militia so the private companies had to fund the militia. Showed how the central government was weak.
