He supported a sovereign, wanted the people to still have some rights, thought that you had to give up some rights to be happy. People had to agree to live peacefully for this to work.

He supported natural law and thought that people were obligated to rebel when kings didn’t respect the people.

He didn’t like the idea of a monarchy ruling. People are born free and then are restricted. Supported popular sovereignty and wanted people to leave some rights behind for the greater good.

People are the ruling authority, government is just there to enforce the laws.

Wanted a republic and wanted to separate government’s powers. Saw sovereign/administrative aspects of government.
How did Baron Montesquieu define a republic?
One having limited power and citizens having political liberty.

Leaders are elected for a limited time. They make and execute laws for the public.

Government is kept in control by checks and balances.
The Declaration of Independence
Contained ideas of popular sovereignty. Said Britain was unfair and declared the colonies free. Justified the reason for rebellion.
Grand Committee
People at the Philadelphia Convention. Made of 1 delegate per state. Made compromises to sort out different wants for the Constitution.
Representative Republic
The people being represented on a national scale. People vote for people to vote on laws.
