What do the principles of separation of powers and checks and balances mean to the U.S. political system?
How many people are there in the House of Representatives?
435 representatives, distributed between states according to population size.
What does the Legislative Branch do?
They deal with laws, funds, and foreign policy.
Who is in the Executive Branch?
The president, vice president, and the cabinet.
What does the Executive Branch do?
They enforce laws.
Who is in the Judicial Branch?
The Supreme Court and other lower courts.
What does the Judicial Branch do?
They interpret the laws and check the other branch’s activities.
How can a law get passed?
Both houses of Congress have to agree.

Separation of powers. Branches have no rule with each other’s work and the government has to be able to control people/itself. Government depends on the people. Discusses how to fix the power of the legislative branch.
Checks and Balances
How the branches limit each other’s powers.
Pocket Veto
The president gets a bill at the end of the legislative section so a refusal to sign kills the bill.
Two-Thirds Override
The president vetoes a bill but the legislative branch can veto the veto if each house separately gets a 2/3 majority.
Advice and Consent
The Senate can consent presidential candidates and the president has to approve presidential candidates.

The House of Representatives
Who holds the impeachment trial?
The Senate with the Chief Justice of the judge. Senate votes with a 2/3 majority.
