Attribution theory
Suggests how we explain someone’s behavior by crediting either the situation or the persons disposition
Social psychology
Scientific study of how we think about, influence, and relate to one another
Fundamental attribution error
Overestimating the influence of personality and underestimating the influence of situations
Attitudes
Feelings, based on beliefs, predispose our reactions to objects, people and events
Foot in the door phenomenon
Tendency for people who agreed to a small action, to comply later with a larger one
Cognitive dissonance theory
we act to reduce the discomfort we feel when our thoughts and actions clash
Conformity
Adjusting one’s behavior or thinking to coincide with a group standard
Normative social influence
Influence resulting from a person’s desire to gain approval or avoid disapproval
Information social influence
Influence resulting from one’s willingness to accept others opinions about reality
Social facilitation
Stronger responses on simple or well learned tasks in the presence of others
Social loafing
Tendency for people in a group to exert less effort when pooling their efforts towards attaining a common goal than one individually accountable
Deindividuation
In a group, you are more likely to do things you wouldn’t normally do
Group polarization
Legitimintly in a group of ppl and the group is influencing us, through discussion
Groupthink
In order to keep peace, we sit back and don’t say anything but then something bad happens
Prejudice
And unjustifiable (negative) attitude toward a group and its members
