Chapter 12: Nervous System Flashcards
What is the function of the cerebellum?
It monitors, plans and coordinates movement
What does the corpus callosum do?
It allows communication between left and right cerebral hemispheres
What happens if the corpus callosum is cut?
The two hemispheres of the brain can no longer communicate with each other . Each operates and learns independently without input from the other side
What are the parts of the diencephalon?
The hypothalamus, thalamus, epithalamus and subthalamus
What is the white matter in the cerebellumis called?
Arbor vitae
What part of the brain stem is responsible for the startle reflex?
Midbrain
What is the link between the nervous and the endocrine system?
Hypothalamus
What is cognition?
Thinking
What is the CNS used for?
Detection of stimuli
What system is involved in detection of stimuli?
Central nervous system
What part of the motor pathway stops inappropriate movements?
Basal nuclei
What part of brain stem blends with the spinal cord as it passes the foramen magnum?
Medulla oblangata
What is a ventricle?
Internal cavity filled with cerebrospinal fluid
What does the cerebellum communicate with to tell the brain what to do?
Cerebrum
How much of the brain does the cerebrum take up?
80%
How many lobes in the cerebrum?
5
What fissure separates the right and left lobe?
Longitudinal
Difference between sulci and gyri?
Sucli are indentations (grooves) and gyri are ridges (bumps)
What increases the surface area of the brain?
Fissures
What are the 5 lobes of the cerebrum?
Frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal, and insula
What lobe has neurons for planning?
Parietal
Where is vision (lobe]?
Occipital
What lobe is by the ears that is involved in language, memory and emotions?
Temporal
Where is the insula?
All the way inside
What area in the cerebrum is involved in speaking?
Broca’s area in the frontal lobe
What area in the cerebrum is involved in understanding speech and language?
The Wernicke’s area in the temporal and parietal lobe
What is the limbic known as?
Amygdala
What is the basal nuclei involved in?
Movement
Where is the limbic system only found?
In mammals
What is the cerebral limbic used for?
Memory, learning, emotion and behavior
What is the hippocampus used for?
Remembering things
What modulates how you react to things?
Cerebral limbic system
What is the parahippocampal gyrus for?
Emotion and behavior
What gland is in charge of the sleep wake cycle?
Pineal gland
What does the diencephalon not include?
Medulla oblangata
What does the subthalamus connect to, helping with movement?
Basal nuclei
What part of the diencephalon tells the pituitary gland to release hormones?
Hypothalamus
What is known as the mommy of the endocrine system?
Hypothalamus
What connects the 2 hemispheres of the cerebellum?
Vermis
What controls how fast breathing and heart rate is?
Pons
What tells out lungs and heart to work and goes directly into the spinal cord, and blends with it after passing through the foramen magnum?
Medulla oblangata
How many hours of sleep do adults and infants need?
Adults - 7 to 8
Infants - 17
What does the EEG measure?
Electrical activity of the brain using electrodes
What is aphasia?
Language deficit when you’re unable to speak
What is the glial cell that allows things to go through the blood brain barrier?
Astrocytes
What part of the spinal cord is involved in detection of stimuli for the PNS?
Posterior root
What produces voluntary movements and inhibits involuntary and inappropriate movements?
Basal nuclei
