Cardiovascular Disease (C) Flashcards
What is the leading cause of death and permanent disability in the US?
Cardiovascular disease
What is compensated heart disease?
The body is able to maintain circulation; heart enlarges
What does decompensated heart disease cause?
Congestive heart failure
Which is the most common form of arteriosclerosis (hardened arteries)?
Atherosclerosis
What happens in a patient with atherosclerosis?
Plaque reduces size of lumen, leading to decreased oxygen flow (angina pectoris) and waste removal, causing ischemia
How do most heart attacks happen?
A blood clot (thrombus) blocks blood flow to the myocardium (hence myocardial infarction)
What is a cerebrovascular accident (CVA)?
A stroke
What is peripheral vascular disease?
When arteriosclerosis/a thrombus/resulting ischemic tissue occurs away from the heart
What are optimal total cholesterol levels?
Under 200 mg/dL
What are borderline high total cholesterol levels?
200-239 mg/dL
What are high cholesterol levels?
240+ mg/dL
What are optimal LDL levels?
Under 100mg/dL
What are borderline high LDL levels?
130-159mg/dL
What are high cholesterol levels?
160-189mg/dL
What are very high cholesterol levels?
180+mg/dL
What HDL level will protect against heart disease?
Over 60mg/dL
What HDL level is considered a risk factor for heart disease?
Under 40/mgdL
What are optimal triglyceride levels?
Under 150mg/dL
What are borderline high triglyceride levels?
150-199mg/dL
What are high triglyceride levels?
200+mg/dL
What should cholesterol intake be limited to per day?
Under 200mg
What macronutrient split is recommended for heart health?
50-55% carbs, 12-20% proteins, 20-35% fats
