BioChem - Nutrition Flashcards
Vit A excess?
joint pain, alopecia
Vit A used to treat?
orally: Measles and AML
topically: wrinkles and acne
B1 - needed for?
ATP - a-ketoglutarate dehydrogenases, transketolase and pryruvate dehydrogenase
B2 - deficiency?
cheilosis and corneal vascularization
B3 - made from? deficiency?
Tryptophan, B2 and B6
Diarrhea, dementia and dermatitis
B5 - used for? Deficiency?
CoA. dermatitis, alopecia, adrenal insufficiency
B6 - used to make?
cystathionine heme niacin Ala 5HT, E, NE, GABA
B6 - deficiency
convulsions, peripheral neuropathy, sideroblastic anemia
B7 - used with what conversions?
Carboxylation Pyruvate to oxalcoacetate acetyl-CoA to malonyl CoA propionyl CoA to methylmalonyl-CoA leucine to acetyl CoA
B7 - deficiency?
dematitis, alopecia, lactic acidosis
B9 - deficiency caused by what drugs?
B9=Folate:
Phenytoin, sulfonamides, MTX
SAM used for?
1) NE to E
2) Regeneration of methionine
Vit C - needed for?
1) collagen
2) Fe absorption
3) dopamine B-hydroxylase (DA to NE)
Hemarthrosis caused by?
1) vit C deficiency
2) hemophilla A
1 cause of Vit D deficiency?
chronic Renal failure
Vit and Babies?
Supplement (not in breast milk)
Vit E - functions?
1) protect cell membranes
2) neutrolizes oxidized LDL
Vit E intake must be taken into account with what drug?
warfarin (synergistic)
Vit K function?
GAMMA-CARBOXYLATION of glutamic acid (for clotting factors)
Zinc deficiency?
hypogonads
loss of pubic/facial hair
dysguesia (loss of taste)
anosmia (loss of smell)
Disulfiram?
inhibits acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (acetaldehyde from EtOH accumulates, causing misery in alcoholics)
Fomepizole?
inhibits alcohol dehydrogenase. Antidote for methanol or ethelyene glycol poisoning
How does EtOH cause hypoglycemia?
1) increases NADH (less free NAD for TCA),
2) pyruvate goes lactic acid and oxaloacetate foes to malate (no TCA)
3) inhibits gluconeogensis and stimulating FA synthesis
4) no TCA, so make ketones
Chromate?
increases insuling sensitivity
