-Schutte et al 2007: EI linked to coping (rational, problem focused coping which is good)
-Parker et al (2004) academic success was strongly associated with several dimensions of emotional intelligence
EI and social interaction
-theoretical framework e.g Bar-On’s 2005 model of ESI
-interrelated emotional and social competencies, skills and behaviours
-5 skill domains, 15 aspects
e.g empathy (interpersonal skill domain) = able to understand other’s emotions, form relationships
-high ESI = better social interaction

-Lopes 2004: pos relationship between ability to manage emotions and quality of social interactions, controlled for BIG 5 factors and found EI was main factor impacting social interactions
-defreese et al 2017: high EI in athletes was only predictor of wellbeing and psychological health when it comes to pos social interactions

theroretical framework: Goleman competency theory of EI
-social competencies learned not innate
-indivs born with general EI that determines potential for learning emotional competencies
-5 competencies but motivation later removed so now 4
EI and social competency research
-yip and martin 2005: association between EI and sense of humour and social competence
-Marquez et al 2006: high EI important for social competence with peers at school, impacts liking of school and increases academic achievement
