A.pathology Exam-basic Terminology Flashcards
What is a lesion?
All types of structural and functional alterations in cells and tissue
What is etiology?
Main cause of the disease
- intrinsic
- genetic
- acquires
What is pathogenesis?
Mechanisms of how a disease develops from initiation to its cellular and molecular manifestations
What diagnosis?
Concise statement or conclusion concerning the nature, cause or name of disease
What is clinical diagnosis?
Based on the data obtained From case history, clinical signs and physical examination
What is differential diagnosis?
List of diseases that could account for the evidence or lesions of the case
What is clinical pathological diagnosis?
Based on changes observed in the chemistry of fluids and hematology, structure and function of cells collected from living patient
What is morphologic diagnosis?
Lesion diagnosis
Based on the predominant lesions in the tissues, may be gross or histologic.
Describes the severity, duration, distribution, location and nature of the lesion
What is macroscopic/gross lesions?
Referring to location, shape, size, color, consistency, texture, appearance on cut section…
Needs to be quantified as in mild, moderate or severe
What is microscopic description?
Must include description of the cellular components of the lesion and the relationship established among them and how that affects the tissue in which they are located
What is an etiological diagnosis?
Names the specific cause of the disease
What is disease diagnosis?
Equally specific stating the common name of the disease
What is prognosis?
Statement of the expected outcome of a condition
