Common Facts
Commonly used to treat: myocardial infarction (MI, heart attack), stroke
Common adverse reactions: bleeding- signs of internal bleeding are black, tarry stools, blood in vomit or urine, red or purple spots on skin
Notes: interactions with many over-the-counter (OTC) products
Mechanism of Action
Interfere with clot formation process
Aggrenox
Generic name: dipyridamole+ASA Capsules: 200mg dipyridamole+25mg ASA Commonly dosed BID Auxiliary label: Take with food Must be dispensed in its original container
Aspirin
Generic name: acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)
Tablets: 80mg chewable, 81mg
Commonly dosed once daily
Note: there are additional strengths of ASA available that are typically used for pain relief (325mg, 650mg)
Auxiliary labels: Take with food
-Avoid NSAIDs and other products containing ASA
Persantine
Generic name: dipyridamole
Tablets and injections available
Auxiliary label: take on an empty stomach
Plavix
Generic name: clopidogrel
Tablets: 75mg, 300mg
Note: 300mg tables are not covered by ODB
Ticlid
Generic name: ticlopidine
Tablets: 250mg
Auxiliary label: take with food
Brilinta
Generic name: ticagrelor
Tablets: 90mg
Auxiliary label: do not discontinue
