Mechanism of Action
Competitive antagonist at angiotensin II receptor site
Block binding of angiotensin II (Angiotensin II=potent vasocontrictor)
Notes
Similar effectiveness as ACEIs but do not cause accumulation of bradykinins or dry cough
First choice for treatment of hypertension in patients with diabetes or Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) in patients who cannot tolerate ACEIs
Contraindicated in second and third trimesters of pregnancy
Interfere with fetal development of kidneys and may cause fetal death
