X.500 Directory Access Protocol (DAP)
Provide a set of rules and standards that organize directories and create a standard interface to allow clients to access the directories
X.500 was the original standard based on the OSI model and very resource intensive
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)
Provide a set of rules and standards that organize directories and create a standard interface to allow clients to access the directories
LDAP is much more compact, designed around the TCP/IP model that allows for faster searches of the directory service because it requires less overhead
Microsoft AD used the LDAP protocol as the foundation for its directory services agent
