Annex C13 Ethernet Flashcards
Functions of Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)
Relies on certain types of Ethernet broadcast messages and Ethernet unicast messages
2 basic functions:
- Resolving IPv4 addresses to MAC addresses - Maintaining a table of mappings
Sending node needs a way to find the MAC address of the destination for a given Ethernet link.
Data Link Layer Media Access Control (MAC) addressing and Network Layer IP addressing
Globally unique for each ethernet device, cannot be changed by software
Physical address (MAC) vs Logical Address (IP) = letter with your name vs letter with your home address
Switches vs Hubs
Switch: segments the collision domain to prevent collisions from happening (preferred for connecting computers) Allows for higher overall throughput because the losses due to collisions have been greatly reduced
Hubs: operate at the layer one and simply extend the collision domain by adding multiple nodes to one connection. Older technology superseded by switches
