Annex C17 LAN Planning Flashcards
Distribution Layer
Concerned with how services that are generated at the Core layer are pushed out to the rest of the LAN
Smaller L3 switches will be employed at this level
Serves as VTP server switches for lower levels
Redundancy and scalability
Multiple connections and trunks
Isolated from the rest of the network by L3 connections
Core Layer
Largest most capable L3 switches
Switch and route traffic as fast as possible
Directly connected to routers
Servers and important network services are generated at the core
Access Layer
Where users access the network
Connected via L2 trunks to distribution layer switches
Simple configurations
Goal is to provide access to the user
Port density and placement are main concerns
Benefits of Layer 3 Switching
Protects, isolates users, servers and COC from issues on other networks
I.E. broadcast storms, root bridge wars
