KSV-21 (Fortezza Card)
Gives the STE the ability to process secure calls
Capabilities of the Secure Terminal Equipment (STE)
Secure Calls
Transferring data at up to 128 kbps using ISDN over tactical/DSN/commercial/foreign networks
Facilitates multimedia applications such as the VTC, digital faxing, data file transfer
Receive cryptographic keys over the phone, including a re-key of STE terminal itself
Safeguarding requirements of the STE telephone set
STE itself is unclassified equipment and does NOT require accountability within the COMSEC material control system
Safeguarding requirements of the KSV-21 (Fortezza Card)
Card must be kept on person or stored in a manner that will minimize loss, unauthorized use, substitution, tampering or breakage
Others may use the card as long as that person is cleared to the security level of the keys programmed on the card
User who accepts responsibility is solely responsible and cannot transfer the card w/o the knowledge of the COMSEC mgmr
Authorized person must supervise access by a person not having an appropriate clearence to the STE with a KSV 21 inserted
Card can be transported w/o written courier authorization
Card can be sent through x ray machines w/o harmful effects
OMNI telephone system
USMC uses OMNI only to encrypt an unsecure phone network
International Maritime Satellite (INMARSAT) Wireless telephone systems
USMC uses INMARSAT systems to provide:
rapid response, man portable, secure voice/fax/data using STE terminals
Secure high speed data transmission with interfaces to KIV 7 and KG 84 series encryption devices
Iridium Wireless Satellite Telephone Systems
Provide constant mobile on the move telephones and other services to small handsets nearly anywhere in the world
Consists of 66 operational satellites and 7 spares
Data from handset is cross linked to adjacent staellites before being down linked to gateways in Arizona or Hawaii
Thuraya Wireless Satellite Telephone Systems
Regional satellite telephone service provider based in the UAE
Provides coverage throughout most of Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia, Australia
