Annex C03 Living in a Network Centric World Flashcards
Marine Corps Enterprise Network (MCEN)
MCEN is the overarching term for every network and computer in the USMC. It consists of all USMC owned, controlled and supported info systems and networks
Network
Collection of devices, from computers, to cell phones, to beepers, that are interconnected by communication channels. Networks provide for the sharing of resources and info
Non Secure Internet Protocol Router (NIPR)
Sensitive but unclassified internet router network. The majority of the training, admin, and garrison operations info flow on NIPRNET.
Secure Internet Protocol Router (SIPR)
USed for documents and info classified up to the secret level
Navvy Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI)
Arose out of an initiative in 2000 to upgrade the NIPRNET MCEN up to a consistent world wide standard. The NMCI transitioned the garrison networks from a government owned ad operated network to purchasing services and capabilities rather than an infrastructure.
Next Generation Enterprise Network (NGEN)
Replacement of NMCI. The MCNOSC will control most of the root services in the network, delegating control to Regional Network Operating Centers.
Four (4) structural elements of a data network
Rules, Messages, Medium, Devices
Rule
Govern how messages flow across a network
Message
The info that travels over the medium
Medium
Method in which devices are connected
Device
Items used to communicate with one another
Convergence
Convergence network is one that can carry voice, video, and data over the same media infrastructure
Four (4) characteristics of network design
Fault tolerant, scalable, secure, and possess quality of service
Circuit Switching Network (CSN) vs Packet Switching Network (PSN)
Connection Orientated vs Connectionless
Connection Orientated
