Annex E02 Synchronization Flashcards

Q

Synchronization

A

Networking term that applies to a state where data or info arrives and departs from connected devices at coordinated time so that the data is neither lost or jumbled

Q

Bit Error

A

Bit error is transferred from the source to the destination within the assigned time slot, but when delivered is of a different value from that sent from the source

Q

Slip

A

Repetition or deletion of a block of bits in a synchronous bit stream due to inadequate synchronization of the 2 clocks controlling the transmission and reception of the signals that represent the symbols

Q

Plesiochronous

A

Most common timing scheme employed in networks is established using a plesiochronous approach

When 2 networks operate with clock sources of sufficiently high stability such that signals in the 2 networks are nearly synchronous, the network is plesiochronous

Q

Stratum

A

Accuracy and stability of each clock are such that there is almost complete coincidence in time keeping and is classified in a 4 level hierarch as defined by ANSI into stratum levels based on performance (quality or accuracy over time)

Primary Reference Source (PRS)

A

Master clocking source in a network is referred to as the PRS

Q

Clock Recovery Timing (Master/Slave)

A

Distributed devices derive or recover their clocking from the PRS via a received signal so that the entire network and all associated network elements maintain synchronization.

Buffer

A

Temporary storage medium used to compensate for a difference in rate of flow of data or time of occurrence of events when transferring data from one device to another
