Anatomy of the eye and orbit (eyeball) Flashcards
Name the 2 parts which make up the fibrous coat
sclera and cornea
Describe the sclera
posterior 5/6, white and gives attachment to muscles moving the eyeball
Describe the cornea
anterior 1/6, transparent, allows light to enter the eyeball
Vascular coat components
choroid, iris, ciliary body
What produces aqueous humor?
ciliary body
Functions of ciliary body
aqueous humor production and to suspend the lens
iris function
controls the diameter of the pupil to control the amount of light rays entering
choroid
blood supply to outer layers of retina
How many layers does the retina have?
10
Sensory coat
retina - light sensitive rods and cones
Why is the vascular layer incomplete?
due to the pupil
What part of the eyeball separates the anterior and posterior segments?
lens
What fluid is found in the anterior and posterior segments?
anterior = aqueous humor posterior = vitreous humor
What nerve is found at the back of they eye, what cranial nerve is this and through which cranial foramen does it pass?
optic nerve - CN 2
optic canal
What type of lens is the one found in the eye? (3)
crystalline
biconvex
transparent
How is the lens suspended?
by suspensory ligaments from the ciliary body
How many degrees are the suspensory ligament and ciliary body found?
360
What are the anterior and posterior chambers of the eye?
both part of the ANTEORIOR SEGMENT and hence contain aqueous humor
separated by the iris
Aqueous humor function
maintain intraocular pressure
vitreous humor function
cushion the retina
Explain the formation and drainage of aqueous humor
produced by the ciliary body into the posterior chamber
passes to the angle of the anterior chamber and into the anterior chamber
exits the eye through the trabecular meshwork and into Schlemm’s canal
How is the cornea seen from the surface of the eye?
reflection of light
