Anatomical Terms and Regions Flashcards
bone type: greater length than width
- most common in the limbs (describe proximal and distal)
long bone
bone type: almost cube-shaped and nearly equal in length and width, e.g. some of the carpal bones (look like rocks)
- connection between bones (wrist)
short bone
bone type: thin bones- distribute force across the long area - skulls
flat bone
bone type: variable shape
irregular
bone type: develop in tendons (patella)- distribute force across a joint - knee, distribute force across quads - people can develop more sesamoid based on the activity they do (dancers, hand writers)
sesamoid
bone type: in joints between skull bones
Sutural bones
A superficial thin layer provides the strength to bones for weight bearing; a larger proportion of compact bone is found at the ends of the bones
Compact (cortical) bone
Found deep to the compact bone and superficial to the marrow cavity if present, contains many small spaces
Spongy/cancellous/trabecular bone
The end of a long bone - the place where it forms a joint between another bone
epiphysis
The region between the epiphysis and the diaphysis- flared region at the ends
metaphysis
The shaft of the long bone (one in a bone)
diaphysis
are projections or outgrowths that either help form joints or serve as attachment points for connective tissue.
