9. Peritoneum Flashcards
What is mesentery?
Double layer of peritoneum that encloses an organ and connects it to the body wall
What sensory modalities is the parietal peritoneum sensitive to?
Touch
Pain
Temperature
Pressure
What type of pain is felt when the parietal peritoneum is irritated? And why?
Localised pain
Because it is supplied by somatic nerves
What sensory modality is the visceral peritoneum sensitive to?
Stretch
What type of pain is felt when the visceral peritoneum is irritated/ stretched/ over-distended? And why?
Diffuse pain
Because it is supplied by ANS afferent fibres
What is the difference between an intra-peritoneal vs retro-peritoneal organ?
Intra - have a mesentery; surrounded by peritoneum
Retro - partially covered in peritoneum
Name organs that are intra-peritoneal (9)
Stomach Gall bladder Small intestine - only 1st part of duodenum Spleen Liver Some appendix Caecum Transverse colon Sigmoid colon
Name the retro-peritoneal organs (10)
SAD PUCKER
Suprarenal (adrenal) glands Aorta (and IVC) Duodenum (except 1st part) Pancreas (except tail) Ureters Colon (ascending and descending) Kidneys oEsophagus Rectum
What are the two sub-classifications of retro-peritoneal organs?
Primary i.e. have always been retroperitoneal - kidneys, adrenal glands
Secondary i.e. were once more mobile but now stuck to body wall - duodenum, pancreas etc
What is meant by extra-peritoneal?
No mesentery ever or lost in development
What organs are infra-peritoneal/ sub-peritoneal?
Pelvic organs - uterus etc
Lower third of rectum
What are the two compartments of the greater sac?
Supra-colic
Infra-colic
What divides the supra-colic and infra-colic compartments of the greater sac?
Mesentery of the transverse colon (transverse mesocolon)
Where does the greater omentum attach?
Greater curvature of stomach
Transverse colon
How many layers make up the greater omentum?
4 - two double layers fused
