7.2 Flashcards
What is an Enzyme?
A catalyst to bring about reactions.
What is a Substrate?
Something that joins with an enzyme to perform a chemical reaction.
What is a Active Site?
Where the substrate joins with the enzyme.
What is Activation Energy?
The minimum amount of energy required for a chemical reaction.
What are the properties of Enzymes?
Speed up chemical reactions
Relationship between reaction rate and Substrate Concentration
Goes up to a certain point until there are no more enzymes to bond with
Relationship between reaction rate and Enzyme Concentration
Goes up to a certain point until there are no more substrates to bond with
Relationship between reaction rate and Temperature Concentration
It goes up and then goes down forming a bump
Relationship between reaction rate and pH Concentration
Goes up and then down forming bumps depending on the enzyme
How would you maximize enzyme activity considering all of the factors discussed in class?
Add more substrates, raise the temperature, and set the pH to something that the enzyme likes.
How would you minimize enzyme activity considering all of the factors discussed in class?
Turn the heat way up so it kills everything, set the pH so it kills everything, and lower the number of substrates.
Compare and contrast inhibition and activation of enzymes
