3.2 Flashcards
Ecological Succession
the process by which the structure of a biological community evolves over time
Primary Succession
The first stage of succession. This happens when the land is barren and there is little to no soil.
Secondary Succession
This is the second stage of succession. There is some soil, and the land is developed more than in the first stage.
Pioneer Species
The first species to colonize the land.
Serial Stages
The in-between stages where the land is not totally fertile, but taller and stronger plants have started to grow. Plants out compete each other.
Climax Community
This normally consists of tall trees. The land is fertile and there are often animals living with the plants.
Species Richness
The number of a species in a certain region.
Species Eveness
How evenly distributed a species is over a certain area.
Genetic Diversity
How diverse the genetics are
Ecological Diversity
How diverse an ecosystem is based on niches and environment
Keystone Species
A species that an ecosystem depends on
Invasive Species
A species that is not native to an ecosystem that harms the ecosystem
What are the differences between primary and secondary succession.
Primary Succession is first, and secondary succession builds off of primary sucession
How do keystone and invasive species affect biodiversity.
Keystone Species are important for the ecosystem’s sucess, and invasive species harm the ecosystem
What is the Shannon-Wiener Index?
A way to measure the biodiversity of an area
