5.2 Flashcards
Electronegativity
measure of how strongly atoms attract new bonding electrons to themselves
What happens to electrons during ionic bonding?
An atom with a higher electronegativity takes an electron from another atom, causing different charges and they stick together.
What happens to electrons in polar covalence?
Unequal sharing of electrons, think about the poles, with positive and negative charges, they are fighting
What happens to electrons during nonpolar covalence?
Equal sharing of electrons, they are fighting over them
Differentiate between a polar and nonpolar covalent bond
Polar is unequal and nonpolar is equal
When given two atoms, what type of bond will form between them and why?
Look at the periodic table
Explain how electronegativity determines what type of bond two atoms will form
