2.1 Flashcards
What is Population?
All of the organisms in the same place at the same time that can reproduce together
What is Population Density
The number of individuals/area
Population Distribution
The pattern in which organisms of a population are spread throughout the range
What is the different between clumped, uniform, and random distribution?
Clumped is clumped, random is randomly spread out, and uniform is even
What populations can be found in a clumped distribution?
Bison, wolves
What populations can be found in a uniform distribution?
Tigers, penguins
What populations can be found in a random distribution?
Dandelions, plants
How do you calculate population density?
find the average of the squares, then multiply by the number of squares
Formula for mark and recapture
total # marked/ total population size = # marked in recapture/ total recaptured
Random sampling would work BEST if populations are in what distribution?
Uniform
Which of the following is the definition of population?
All of the organisms in the same place at the same time that can reproduce together
One night, you trap 40 mice, mark them, and let them go. Two nights later, you again trap 40 mice, and 20 of them are marked. What is the total number of mice in the meadow?
80
Resources are scarce and as a result species are very territorial
Uniform
A certain fish species tends to gather in large groups to avoid being singled out and eaten by predators
Clumped
The seeds of a plant species are distributed by wind in a field where conditions are uniform
Random
