6.3 Gas Exchange In Fish Flashcards
What are the components of the gill?
The flap (operculum)
Gill arch
Filament on the bone arch
Lammelae on the Filimants
What do the filaments do?
Increase surface area
How do mammals breathe?
Chest contract and moves out
Diaphragm contacts and moves out
Pressure decreases in lungs
Air moves in
Repeat but opposite
How do fish breathe?
Fishes lower mouth lowers
Operculum closes
Pressure decreases and water moves in
Lower mouth moves up
Operculum opens
Water washes over the gills and diffuses oxygen
Water is forced out via pressure
What is counter current flow in a fish?
Blood and water flow in opposite directions
What makes counter current flow good?
Maintains a conc gradient so oxygen can diffuse through lammelae
