4.5 Co Transport Flashcards
What are the 3 layers involved in co transport in the small intestine?
Lumen of ileum
Epithelial cell
Blood
What are co transporters?
Carrier proteins that require 2 particles to open
How do co transporters assist moving against a concentration gradient?
One particle moving along its concentration gradient forces another against its concentration gradient
What are the pumps called that connect the ileum and the blood?
Sodium-potassium pumps
How does glucose get from the lumen of ileum to the blood?
Sodium ions force glucose against its concentration gradient via co transport and then glucose can simply diffuse out into the blood from the epithelial cell
How does sodium get from the lumen of ileum to the blood?
Co transport along concentration gradient into epithelial cell than is actively transported into the blood by a sodium-potassium pump
What is endocytosis?
Where a substance is pocketed by a membrane whilst the membrane pinches off and reforms
What is exocytosis?
A substance being engulfed by being pocketed by a membrane
Do exo and endocytosis require ATP?
Yes
