3.2.4 cardiovascular disease Flashcards
Cardiovascular
Leading cause of death for men women and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States. One person dies every 37 seconds in the US. About 647,000 Americans die from heart disease each year that’s one in every four deaths.
What is cardiovascular disease
Coronary artery disease
coronary heart disease
myocardial infarction
stroke
Types of cardiovascular disease
coronary artery disease
Plaque buildup along the arterial walls of the heart
Types of cardiovascular disease
coronary heart disease
The result of coronary artery disease with blockages in the heart present
Types of cardiovascular disease Myocardial infarction
Heart attack
Types of cardiovascular disease
Stroke
Lots of blood flow to the brain or rupture of an artery in the brain
Cardiovascular disease CVD risk factors
High blood pressure >130/80 unhealthy blood cholesterol levels diabetes obesity diet high in fat, sugar, processed foods physical inactivity tobacco use age
Coronary artery disease- defined
Arterial plaque made up of deposits of cholesterol and other substances causes arteries to narrow and hardening process is called atherosclorosis.
Coronary artery disease define
Blood cholesterol made by liver is essential for health but too much is a problem
LDL versus HDL coronary artery disease
- LDL can cause cholesterol to be deposited into arterial walls and raise the risk of CVD and stroke
- HDL absorbs free cholesterol and carries it back to the liver which then flushes it from the body high levels of HDL can lower your risk of heart disease and stroke
Coronary artery disease signs and symptoms
Angina or chest pain shoulder or arm pain weakness lightheadedness nausea vomiting cold sweat shortness of breath
Stoke
-Can be referred to as a brain attack
-two types of stroke ischemic and hemorrhagic.
more common in women than men
risk doubles every 10 years after age 55
family history of stroke increased risk
Stroke Dash ischemic
Occurs when blood flow to the brain becomes obstructed by either a plaque or a black clot
Stroke hemorrhagic
Occurs when a blood vessel or any risen burst in the brain
Stroke signs and symptoms
-Numbness or weakness in the face arms or legs
often affect one side of the body
-confusion or trouble speaking
-trouble with vision in either one or both eyes
- loss of coordination for walking dizziness loss of balance -headache
