Reflective listening
Guess at underlying meanings and intentions behind client’s words
purpose of reflective listening
clarify misinterpretations, gather information missed, add depth to expressed thoughts /feelings, more self awareness and client feels heard
Reflective listening steps
listen to speakers message, determine meaning, reflect back in your own words, see confirmation
Perceptive reflections
Reflect what you think the person is saying
- deeper emotional responses by making client feel heard understood and validated
- develops discrepancy between the clients current behaviors and future desired behaviors.
- ideal ratio is 2:1
Types of reflections
- Simple
- Complex
- Amplified
- Double sided
- shifted focus
- Feeling
Simple reflection
Paraphrase/restate what the client is saying using their own words without exaggeration
Complex reflections
Paraphrase to take a guess at underlying feelings or meanings of what client said
Double sided reflections
Using prior readiness statements when met with resistance to gain perspective and make different decisions as to how they want to move forward. Example: Client says “I don’t want to eat healthy because I don’t want to give up cookies” Coach says “you feel it’s hard to eat healthy because you enjoy cookies so much and I’ve also heard you say before it’s important for you to eat healthier and reduce sweets to prevent diabetes which runs in your family”
Shifted focus reflections
Redirect attention away from resistance provoking subject to focus on another area.
feeling reflections
Reflect what user is feeling verbal cues versus non-verbal cues read between the lines ,clarification
-Example client “says if I don’t stop smoking I could develop lung cancer and die” Coach says “you’re worried if you continue smoking the effects are detrimental to your health and your life”
